About me

My name is Martina Wormuth, and I’m a Pennsylvania native that has had a history with money, ranging from dealing with student loans to learning from my mom’s poor debt management skills. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in sociology from Shippensburg University (“Ship”) in Shippensburg, PA in 2007, right when the stock market started to get in trouble, the economy started to dip, and unemployment was at its highest. I blew through my savings, but in the process, learned how to live on very little. I went back to school in 2008, partially because I couldn’t find a job, but also because I figured out where my heart was at: writing.

I earned my Masters degree in Communication Studies from Ship in August of 2010. Since then, I’ve used my real- life experiences with personal finance to help other people with all of the topics you’ll see here on Money Thinking. I’m definitely not perfect; I got out of over $3,000 in credit card debt after only paying minimum payments for 5 years, I have owned 3 different cars that ended up being lemons, and have overcharged on my debit card more times than I can count (thank goodness for overdraft protection!). But, I hope that my mistakes and mishaps can help my readers to better learn how to manage their finances without doing the same stupid things that I’ve done.
One of the things that I am most passionate about is giving. I love to give my time, talents, and treasure, and I believe that generosity is a big way that we can stay financially healthy, because it helps us to focus on the needs of others instead of our own wants and desires. This, plus a healthy dose of head knowledge (I love to learn, so academia is always important in my mind), can help us to use our money to it’s highest potential.

When I’m not blogging, I enjoy playing video, board, and card games, reading, working with teenagers and volunteering at my local church.
