6 Steps to Success in this Struggling Economy
So, the economic situation is still absolutely awesome. That was sarcasm. Anyway, it is getting a little better as Europe works to figure out their debt issue, but it’s still not overly pleasant or advantageous in anyway. My state capital (Harrisburg) just filed for bankruptcy protection. Now, granted, Harrisburg has struggled with debt problems for years, but I doubt they are and/or will be the only city to have to do such a thing.
If cities can’t even prosper in this lousy economy, what is a common person like you or I supposed to do? Today we’re going to look at 6 ways that each of us can find a little bit of financial success in these rough financial times.
- Keep up with your training. This is probably the one thing that will keep you on the cutting edge of the job market. Whether you’re employed or not, look for inexpensive ways to learn new technologies. Many communities offer classes of some sort to help people receive important job training and most of them are relatively cheap. Keeping those skills updated shows ambition on your part if nothing else.
- Change that American mindset. When the economy started to suffer, the American Dream quickly became a nightmare for many people. Foreclosures and repossession of items that people still owed money on became commonplace. People are still dealing with these things, so I think that it really is time for us to change what our dream is. Live simply and forget about “social status.” Enjoy life; it’s not all about having the “best” stuff.
- Don’t be afraid to take small risks. We have a tendency to hoard in bad financial situations. This shouldn’t always be the case. If you see a good deal on a stock that has potential future, take a little risk and invest in it. If you take no risks at all, you have no chance for success, so why not try?
- Eliminate your debt. Get rid of it. All of it! You don’t necessarily have to close accounts, but at least get yourself out from underneath the financial control that debt takes from us. If you have a lot of debt, consider consolidating it as well.
- Be thrifty. I’ve talked about this before; utilize free and inexpensive activities that your community offers. Go to discount grocery stores, use coupons, find big sales, walk instead of drive, do all of that stuff I always tell you to do. You’ll save big bucks and hopefully you’ll enjoy it too!
- Have a backup plan. What will your family do if you and/or your spouse lose their job? Are you willing to commute and/or move? Do you have money saved in case of an emergency? Too many Americans (including myself, sadly) don’t have a backup plan in case the “crap hits the fan.” Don’t be one of those people.
Seeking success during these tough times is difficult, but these 6 things are good steps to consider when trying to find that success. Have a great weekend and until Monday, spend smart, save smart!
